Entertainment, Television → Stylista…Maybe Not.

On Wednesday nights, I come home to a full DVR. There are just so many shows to keep up with! One of which is CW’s new reality series, Stylista. Anyone catch that? The show revolves around contestants competing for an editorial position at Elle. The prize does not just end there…the winner gets a paid lease on an apartment in Manhattan and a clothing allowance from H&M for one year. That’s a SWEET deal!!!
While I was excited for the show to premier, I have to say, I was super disappointed. I wanted to write about it right after it first aired but I thought I’d hold off on my thoughts and give it a few more episodes…my opinion hasn’t changed. I get so frustrated because of the way the show portrays the fashion industry. There are nice people in our industry; not everyone is out to stab you in the back and not every task given is an impossible one. I mean, if I wanted to watch a repeat of “The Devil Wears Prada,” I could have just rented the DVD. Does a show really need that much cattiness to add to its entertainment value? And why is Anne Slowey trying to be Anna Wintour? I would have loved to see the real Anne as opposed to this character she’s so desperately trying to be.
The show does have it’s positives; seeing different aspects of the industry and understanding what goes into a magazine, for example. That’s the only reason why I still watch it. People outside of our industry must think we’re crazy for staying on in it. I guess I’m smart enough to know that while an editorial job can be challenging at times, people don’t treat you like dirt. And yes, I still love “Elle” and the work that Anne does.
