NY Street Trend: Borrowed from the Boys

Over the last few seasons, the runways have seen dominance from the boys…on the women’s runway, that is. Looks inspired by menswear and boywear are seeping into all areas of the fashion-forward woman’s wardrobe. The items once considered a norm in a man’s wardrobe can be incorporated into casual or dressed up looks for women. Designers have updated blazers, vests and cardigans and integrated these items to create a look that very much seems very much as though it belongs to a man.

From classic blazers to the boyfriend cardigan, the streets of New York show a variety of key items in this look.

Blazers

  • This silhouette has become a staple of the close
  • Found in different fabrics such as wool, velvet and twill
  • Worn over tunics and jeans for a more casual, younger look

Vests

  • The vest can be worn with many different styles
  • Usually cropped or waist-length
  • Found in lighter fabrics like cotton
  • Black and white are most popular colour

Cardigans

  • Long, loose fitting, sporty cardigans dominate the commercial market
  • Edited versions of the boyfriend cardigan are seen on the streets as well
  • Great for layering in the cold weather

Over the years, designers have paved the way for this look, proving that boyish can be stylish. From the runway to the streets, this trend has slowly made its way into the mass market. The key items that create this look prove to be versatile; great for both day and night and classic closet items as well. Look out for this trend as it continues to evolve over the seasons!
