Style-Safe Red Carpet

At the 66th Annual Golden Globe Awards last night, flocks of A-listers paraded down the red carpet in recession-friendly gowns.  Classic? Yes.  Elegant? Oh yes.  Boring? ABSOLUTELY! For the most part, the stars looked stunning in their minimal yet glamourous pieces but they lacked some serious wow-factors.  Anyone remember Marion Cotillard’s Gaultier mermaid dress at the Oscars last year? Or Anne Hathaway’s Versace dress at the Venice Film Festival in September? That’s the kind of meat we’re looking for on the red carpet!

One of the most popular shapes of the night – the mermaid.

The Hollywood crowd also played it safe with pale shades and nudes.

The only thing worse than sameness on a red carpet is an overflowing, boring amount of black so I was extremely thankful for the folks that replaced black with shades of purple.

The safely played red carpet gave a chance for some to shine.  I’m not sure how I feel about Renee Zellweger’s number but props to her for taking such a risk! Laura Linney’s gown looked like it was draped just for her and the yellow seemed fresh amongst the doomed-coloured crowd.

Heidi Klum and Maggie Gyllenhaal were perhaps the biggest risk takers in my book with their adorable prints and classy flowers.

I’m normally pro-Lopez but last night’s number really took a toll on me.  Mamma really needs to learn how to cover up!

My favourite look of the night had to be Eva Mendes.  Though she succumbed to the minimalist, one-toned, strapless look with a sculptured Dior gown, she perfectly paired it with a vintage Van Cleef & Arpels turquoise necklace to make herself stand out.  Nice job, Mendes!

There are lots of mixed opinions on various dresses & looks.

    I did NOT like:
Cameron Diaz. Not so much the hello kitty pink dress but more the colour of her hair! Yuck!
Debra Messing. Still in that raccoon eyes make-up!? And was her ponytail MEANT to look like roadkill?
    Miley Cyrus. NO.
Laura Dern. Uh, I have a real problem with nude coloured things under see-thru black. Renee Zellweger’s wasn’t any better but at least her had some interesting shape.

    The good:
Madeline Zima (the youngest one from THE NANNY!). I looove that ORANGEY colour!
    Salma Hayek. Yummy Mummy!
Anna Paquin. I could see the parts that didn’t quite get covered by the spanx she was wearing when E was interviewing her. But the colour of her dress was really nice!

    The ???:
Maggie Gyllenhaal. Baby blue leopard print?
Heidi AUF WIEDERSEHEN Klum. I get that she’s trying to hide her baby bump but that’s like hiding a zit by putting peanut butter on your face!

There are definitely some mixed opinions out there. I read a website that rated J.Lo to be “best dressed”…really??? Madeline Zima did look super fresh in that orange! Someone I didn’t put up that I liked as well was Melissa George :)

My boyfriend just asked me to marry him and in a few months. I am hoping for a later fall wedding but we haven’t complete much planning yet. Does anyone have ideas about when is the good time to purchase the wedding dress?
